The role
A large Australian Government agency is seeking a Senior Data Analyst to lead business metadata uplift for priority datasets, including data used by approved AI projects. You will lead metadata development for assigned datasets, supervise metadata developers, engage business and technical stakeholders, and ensure metadata is consistent, complete and ready for registration.
Contract: initial term of up to 12 months from an estimated start of 1 December 2026, with extension options. Up to 50 hours per week. Senior level (APS6 equivalent).
Location: capital city of QLD, ACT, VIC, SA or TAS, including Cairns and Robina. You will work onsite for the first 6 weeks, after which a hybrid arrangement may be considered. You must live within reasonable travel distance to attend onsite when needed.
What you need
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance before starting.
Must be willing to work at the role location for the full contract.
Expertise implementing the ISO/IEC 11179 standard for metadata registries.
Knowledge of related standards such as ONDC metadata attributes, National Archives of Australia requirements and DCAT, or the ability to learn them quickly.
Demonstrated experience leading metadata development, quality assurance or related data management work.
Responsibilities
Lead the metadata workstream: help set scope, governance, success measures and reporting; prioritise high-value data assets; plan and allocate work to metadata developers; track progress, quality, risks, coverage and registration status.
Analyse and curate existing metadata, data warehouse artefacts, data dictionaries, data models, lineage and source-system documentation.
Assess coverage, gaps, duplication and inconsistent terminology; harmonise definitions, naming and governance attributes.
Write clear, plain-English definitions and data asset descriptions for business and technical audiences, and review the workstream's metadata for quality.
Lead engagement with subject matter experts, data stewards, engineers, analysts and AI project contacts; validate metadata and manage it through registration.
Coach metadata developers in ISO/IEC 11179 and agency standards, and support handover to ongoing stewardship.
Essential criteria
Expertise implementing the ISO/IEC 11179 standard for metadata registries.
Knowledge of ONDC metadata attributes, National Archives of Australia requirements and DCAT, or the ability to learn them quickly.
Experience leading metadata development, quality assurance or related data management work.
Data communication (DCF Level 2): build a clear narrative from data and communicate between technical and non-technical audiences.
Data outputs, products or services (DCF Level 2): produce data outputs using established processes and explain the decisions made.
Identify research questions (DCF Level 2): structure research questions and design the approach and measures to answer them.
Integrate data (DCF Level 1): understand how data can be linked, and the benefits and limitations of doing so.
Statistical data analysis (DCF Level 2): use statistical applications and understand and amend existing code.
Subject matter expertise (DCF Level 2): deep knowledge of the subject area and what affects how its data is used.
Visualise data (DCF Level 1): interpret and create basic tables, charts and graphs.

Data governance and data management experience.
Strong research, analysis and synthesis skills.
Strong written and verbal communication and facilitation skills.
